Homily

Twenty-ninth Sunday (Year B)
World Mission Sunday

Sunday, 20th October, 2024

Rev. Fr. Dr. Titus Imojime

READINGS: Is 53:10-11; Ps 33:4-5, 18-20, 22; Heb 4:14-16; Mk 10:35-45

Theme: “Go and invite Everyone to the Banquet” (Mat.22:9)

The history of humanity and the development of Society revolves around the ministry of service. Everyone you meet and everywhere you go, you will always find this notice ” Our business is to Serve you”. We see this advertisement from the street boy selling bread and top-up, to the hotels, banks, supermarkets and even in the house of parliament. Government workers are called public servants, the armed forces provide military service and politicians aspire for leadership positions in order to serve the people.

Indeed, the apostolate of service keeps the human society alive and gives it order.

The business of the Church is also to serve humanity and prepare them for Eternity through the proclamation of the Gospel.

This is the task the Church wishes to re – enkindle as we celebrate today the World mission Sunday. This pastoral feast was instituted by Pope Pius Xi in 1926. The celebration focuses on promoting works of Evangelization, praying for missionaries and making Donations to support the missionary initiatives of the Church.

Every Christian is called to be a missionary by virtue of our baptism. And so we are all called to participate in this ministry of Gospel Service, by witnessing to the Gospel through our lives, praying for vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and donations to support missionaries.
