Sunday, 20 April 2025: Homily The Resurrection of the Lord: A Summary and Reflection

The Heart of the Christian Faith
Jesus' Resurrection

Summary

First Reading: Acts 10:34a, 37–43
In his address, Peter proclaims the core of the Christian message: Jesus, anointed by God, went about doing good and healing. Though He was crucified, God raised Him on the third day. Chosen witnesses, including Peter himself, saw Him alive and even shared meals with Him. Now, they are commissioned to preach that forgiveness of sins is offered through His name to all who believe.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 118
“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice in it and be glad.”
A psalm of victory and thanksgiving. It celebrates God’s enduring love and the triumph of the “stone rejected by the builders,” which has become the cornerstone, a clear reference to Christ’s Resurrection.

Second Reading: Colossians 3:1–4
Saint Paul calls the faithful to seek the things that are above, where Christ is. Through Baptism, believers have died to earthly life and risen with Christ. Their true lives are now hidden in God, and they will share in Christ’s glory when He is revealed.

Gospel: Matthew 28:1–10
At dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary visit Jesus’ tomb. An angel descends, rolls back the stone, and announces: “He is not here; for He has risen.” Overcome with joy and awe, the women hurry to share the news. On the way, they encounter the Risen Christ, who greets them and instructs them to tell the disciples to go to Galilee, where they will see Him.

Reflection

Easter Sunday is the cornerstone of the Christian faith, the celebration of Jesus’ victory over death. His Resurrection brings not only the promise of eternal life but also a transformation of the present: sorrow is turned to joy, and fear gives way to hope.

The empty tomb is not the end of the story, but the beginning of a new creation. Like Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, we are called to witness and proclaim this Good News. Christ is alive, and His presence changes everything.

Today, we are invited to rise with Him, to leave behind fear, sin, and despair, and to walk in the light of His victory. May this Easter fill our hearts with joy and renew our mission to be bearers of His peace and love in the world.
