Watch and Pray in Anticipation of the Lord’s Coming

Theme: The importance of preparation and vigilance in anticipation of Christ’s coming, both at Christmas and at the Second Coming.

The First Sunday of Advent inaugurates the liturgical year and invites Christians to reflect on the dual nature of Christ’s coming: His birth at Christmas and His return in glory. The readings encourage believers to stay spiritually alert, preparing their hearts and minds for the Lord’s arrival.

Advent serves as a time for renewal, hope, and active waiting, reminding us to focus on spiritual readiness amidst life’s distractions. The lighting of the first Advent candle represents the hope that sustains us as we journey toward Christ’s presence.

SCRIPTURAL CONTEXT

First Reading: Jeremiah 33:14-16
The prophet Jeremiah proclaims God’s promise to raise a righteous branch from David’s line who will bring justice and peace to His people, pointing to the hope of the Messiah.

Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 3:12 – 4:2
Paul encourages the faithful to grow in love and holiness, living lives pleasing to God as they prepare for the coming of the Lord.

Gospel: Luke 21:25-28, 34-36
Jesus speaks of signs in the heavens and on earth preceding His return. He calls for vigilance and prayer so that His followers may stand confidently before the Son of Man when He comes in glory.
