Vatican City — The Body of Pope Francis Lies in State as Thousands Gather to Pay Respects

The body of Pope Francis has been transferred to St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, where it now lies in state following a solemn rite led by the College of Cardinals on Wednesday morning.

The Rite of Translation began in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta, the late Pope’s residence, with Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, offering prayers for the repose of the Pope’s soul.

In his opening remarks, Cardinal Farrell gave thanks for the pontiff’s 12-year ministry. “As we now leave this home, let us thank the Lord for the countless gifts He bestowed on the Christian people through His servant, Pope Francis,” he said. “Let us ask Him, in His mercy and kindness, to grant to the late Pope an eternal home in the kingdom of heaven.”

The College of Cardinals then processed through Santa Marta Square, passing under the Arch of the Bells before arriving at St Peter’s Square. An estimated 20,000 mourners had gathered there, many of whom applauded quietly as the coffin was carried into the basilica.

Once inside, the coffin was placed before the Altar of the Confession, where the Litany of the Saints was chanted in Latin. A brief Liturgy of the Word followed, led by Cardinal Farrell, including a Gospel reading from John (17:24–26) reflecting on Christ’s love and unity with his disciples.

The rite concluded with the singing of the Salve Regina, a traditional Marian hymn.

Members of the College of Cardinals were first to pay their respects, followed by the faithful who had filled the basilica.

St Peter’s Basilica will remain open to the public for viewing until midnight on Wednesday, from 7:00 a.m. to midnight on Thursday, and from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Due to the large turnout, Vatican officials have indicated that the hours may be extended if necessary.

Cardinal Farrell will preside over the rite of the sealing of Pope Francis’ coffin on Friday, April 25, at 8:00 p.m.

The Funeral Mass will take place in St Peter’s Square on Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 a.m., and will be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals. Church leaders and faithful from around the world are expected to attend.

Following the Mass, Pope Francis will be interred in the Basilica of St Mary Major, fulfilling his final wish.
